The delays are due to China's tighter inspections on imports as a Covid-19 prevention measure.

Le Thanh Hoa, deputy head of the Department of Processing and Trade for Agro-Forestry-Fisheries said that the customs clearance at Huu Nghi, Tan Thanh and Chi Ma border gates in Lang Son have fallen by half to just 220 container trucks per day.

As of the morning of December 11, around 800 trucks carrying frozen seafood and 300 trucks transporting fruit were stranded at Mong Cai Border Gate in Quang Ninh Province. Just 40-50 containers trucks get customs clearance every day at Mong Cai Border Gate.

More trucks have brought dragon fruits to Lang Son after border gates in Lao Cai and Ha Giang were no longer able to process goods by China. This has resulted in severe congestion for border gates in Lang Son.

It costs each container truck around a parking fee of VND400,000 (USD17.39) per day at border gates while waiting for customs.

China has been strengthening inspections and disinfection of goods and means of transport and drivers from Vietnam, slowing down customs clearance.
